S1 Carbs - Recommended rebuild specialists required

Despite various attempts to adjust and resets the carbs on my S1 it looks like they need a rebuild.

Any suggestions on a reputable specialist who would do a good job and any idea of costs?

If you you're confident with a screwdriver and organised, they're easy enough to do yourself with the genuine kits from Eurocarb. About £100 for a pair of kits I seem to recall.

I really want them to be done "professionally". Mind you I have been bitten by a few "Lotus Specialists" in the past!!

As long as you strip, clean and rebuild them meticulously using genuine kits then set the float levels, set the mixture and balance the airs as per the manual they should be fine.

I agree with @eeyoreish if you do them yourself you know what's been done and done properly. 

There's a great deal of satisfaction to be had from setting up a set of multi choke carbs.

Agree with Neil and Steve. It’s a good task to DIY. Plenty of documentation around on how to do it. Very rewarding job once you’ve completed it.

Get a sonic bath, digital camera and parts from eurocarb then do it yourself, it’s easy.

Alternatively I think  eurocarb can do them for about £400, that was a few years back though!

Oh then you need a morgan carb tune, although your car is MOT exempt, so no  emissions test!

To do it properly you also need to check/adjust the pump jet volume, which is doable, but requires a heath robinson jig to collect and then measure the fuel volume.

I tried that when I restored mine and couldn't adjust the pump rods to give the required volume of fuel with the number of accelerator pumps. In the end I gave up and set the rods so they looked like other cars! I have heard of a method of setting them where, instead of measuring the volume of fuel, you measure how far they squirt fuel with one push of the accelerator. Anybody tried that method with success?

Not heard that but you will be suprised how far they can squirt fuel, probably not far off a coupe of metres!   There are also different weight of diapfragm spings and jet sizes that would give different results, so that would need factoring to a squirt distance calculations!.   However, it seems reasonable that they should all be the same.   I posted a topic about this last year when I set mine up.   The 2 observations I had was that they were not set up correctly when supplied and that the number of threads exposed was not reliable across all 4 chokes.   I would wonder if your non-return valves are not functioning correctly if you could net get them within spec?   Here's what my plugs look like on a 110K miles motor

To be honest I don't have the time to do this myself and I want to be sure they are 100% right when they go on the car hence putting them to a Forum recommended "specialist".

There's a Dellorto rebuild book available for those guys that have more time. Also I shall be doing this soon and will post some pictures. I already have the sonic bath and specialist carb cleaning solution, I find it difficult to get any job.done to the standard I want at a reasonable price. I always seem to find things I'm not happy with when other people do the work and end up doing it myself anyway. My carbs have already been rebuilt but then left unused. They have tarnished by just sitting around, so time for a rebuild!

Yep that's the one, it's really comprehensive. The entire rebuild is quite straightforward.A sonic bath will really help. They are relatively cheap.
