Turbocharger part numbers

Recommended Posts

What's the difference between turbo part numbers 465133-3 and 465133-4? I ask because I wanted a turbo for my S4s, and the supplier sent me the former, which I believe is different from the latter.

I think the -3 is the S4, and the -4 is the S4s. But as the most famous turbo supplier in the country appears not to know the difference, I thought I'd ask the forum members.

If the difference is solely the compressor wheel, that's fine, I can tell the aforementioned specialists how to supply the correct turbo.

Found this re the GT3...

GT3 Turbocharger.

Lotus P/N - A920E6002
Garrett P/N - 465133-(000)3

From the Turbo's ID plate, it is known that the GT3 has a 50 trim compressor wheel in a T3 housing. With that information, the compressor 'map' can be obtained from the manufacturer to observe it's performance.

The 'map' is an area graph, each section will be dealt with in turn to try and simplify what is a very complex set of constantly changing variables - the main culprit of this being heat generated by compressing air. This is shown by the coloured efficiency islands, the more efficient area the turbo operates in, the less heat generated - in this case the T3 is actually pretty good across the board.

Ta.

So far it seems my research leads me to believe the S4s turbo is a T3 with a 60 trim compressor, but to be confirmed.

The plate on the turbo lists -

Model No.                        TB0373

SAG (whatever that is)    465133-4

Serial No. -                      YF00103A

Customer No.                  A910E7043F

I'm sure that's correct from memory. The T3 is the turbine housing with the 3 bolt flange as with the early Ford Cosworth. The 60 trim compressor is the T34. Many fit a T3/T4 hybrid which I'm in the process of building myself.

Will post my progress in due course.

I'm looking at the ball bearing of ceramic bearing options also.

The timeline goes like this:-

On receiving the 465133-3 S4 turbo, I phoned to say it wasn't the right one.

"Yeah, it's the right one."

"But it's the wrong part number, so it's not the right turbo."

"No, mate, it's the right one."

"So how come the one I've got is a different part number?"

"It's probably been superceded."

"So, the -4 has been superceded by a -3? I don't think so. I'd be a -5, wouldn't it?"

Silence.

"What's the trim wheel, then?"

"Sorry mate, I can't tell you."

"What, you can't, or won't?"

"Dunno what it is."

"Well, I don't think this is the right turbo."

I then got passed to another guy, and went through the same rigmarole:

"You sent me this yesterday, it's a different part number to the one I have. It's not the right turbo."

"Yes, it is, mate, it's the one listed for your car."

"Which car would that be, then?"

"Lotus Esprit turbo."

"Which model?"

"They're all the same."

"What's the trim wheel?"

"Sorry mate, I can't tell you, dunno."

"Well, can you put me through to someone who can?"

Five minutes on hold ensued before someone else answered.

"What's the trim wheel on this turbo you've sent me?"

"Err.....55, mate."

"It should be 60, it's the wrong turbo."

"OK, we'll take it back."

The incorrectly supplied 4565133-3 turbo was collected yesterday, and I e-mailed the supplier yesterday with the details supplied by Brian Angus via Bibs. No response to my e-mail, so I phoned up this morning, and it went something like this:-

"Did you get my e-mails I sent yesterday?"

"Errrr......errrr.......yeah."

"I have to ask, because I didn't get any response from you."

Silence.

"So, now you've got the right details, can you do the job?"

"Errr..........yeah, we should be able to."

"Can you got the right parts to do it, then?"

"Dunno, I'll have to speak to the build manager."

"Do you want my original turbo back, and rebuild that instead? At least then I'd know it's got the right bits."

"No, we'll rebuild the new one we've just sent you."

"But you don't know if you can get the right parts."

"I'll have to speak to the build manager."

To be honest, I reckon I was speaking to someone that had wandered in, and happened to hear a phone ringing. Not encouraged by all this, but we shall see. But frankly the most annoying, and disappointing, thing is that I gave them the correct part number when I ordered the turbo, and they ignored my instruction, and sent me the wrong one.

I wasn't going to name the supplier, but I will: Turbo Technics.

I did ask initially. But when I was offered one already rebuilt that was off the shelf, it seemed logical to accept it. Had I known what was going to transpire, I would have gone somewhere else to start with, as the lack of professionalism has been astonishing.

Of course the story is not yet over, and given their performance so far, I'm fully expecting more potholes in the road on the journey.

Why not just rebuild your own, its not that difficult. I rebuilt mine for my S4s, and while I was at it upgraded it to a T4 on the cold side with a new larger compressor wheel and housing, and upgraded to a 360'bearing and seals. The parts are not expensive. All you need to do is have it balanced, and this only cost me €50 at a local turbo repair centre. Have a look at my gallery, I have some photos of the rebuild.

Cheers

I am capable of rebuilding a turbo Dave, but to be honest I've got so much work on my hands with the car I can't be doing with any more fannying around at the moment, or it'll never get put back together! Unless you're offering...................!

I had hoped buying a recon was going to be a simple affair, and I liked the idea of a warrantied product, but it appears not to be the case. I am also hoping that all will turn out well, but I'm not holding my breath.

Hi Dave

Do you still have the supplier and part numbers which you used?

If I just replace the bearing and seals could I mark it before disassembly and rebuild to the marks?

Thanks

Glyn
