So couple of hour's drive to go have a look at the project, and crazy though it sounds, it's on. Anyone know of a wrecked excel. No engine or gearbox required. but just about everything else.  Dont even need the shell. Needs to be pretty cheap to make this one viable. But it's going to happen.

Really ?    I look forward to the pics,  James May loved that car, it looked really tidy also,  Very practical ,  unlike Clarksons mobile two storey apartment car lol

OK, so sneak preview. Now get the imagination working and maybe you can see my vision. Color change to a fairly light shade of British racing Green metallic with Yellow pinstripe. Original wheel diamond cut,and on the back a fully prepped engine and gearbox on a stand complete with a prop shaft angled down to the floor as a dummy drive unit. The project will be for show purposes only. The structural integrity of the shell has been preserved along with bracing bonded into the rear half to prevent any flexing. The rear panel has been converted to a drop down tailgate and tails lights split where the tailgate drops down. The cargo deck has been lined out and coated with the timber being professional cut and fitted by a bespoke carpenter who is a  specialists in classic restoration's.

Now what's the vote, crazy, stupid, or what.

Sorry John. I am trying, but I just can't get there.

All we know is that when they stop making this, we will be properly, properly sad.Jeremy Clarkson on the Esprit.

Opinions are like armpits. Everyone has them, some just stink more than others.

Decals all designed and new name plate for the tailgate. Lotus Ecup.  Ecup Translated to, A Gift From God. E in keeping with the Lotus Ethos of always starting with an E for the name. Was going to call it Lotus ICUP ( pronounced Ik Up 0 but didnt seem right with a I. Might change it yet though.

Maybe Lotus ElGrand.

Or Lotus Ethos Ikup.

Ethos definition is - the distinguishing character, sentiment, moral nature, or guiding beliefs of a person, group, or institution;.

Did think of that one but I recon weight restriction may come into play as there will be virtually no weight in the back.

I saw that at the Practical Classics show early this year.  I thought it looked great.  It reminded me of the XJ6 pick-up that used to ferry parts around Jaguar's Browns Lane factory in the 70's.

S4 Elan, Elan +2S, Federal-spec, World Championship Edition S2 Esprit #42, S1 Elise, Excel SE

These are old classic cars John. They can only be bought or sold on the basis of such. They will require near constant fettling to get right and keep right.

Just when I think I’ve got a running Esprit - there’s something else to attend to either on a planned or unplanned basis. That’s not too say they are unreliable or trouble - but anyone whom hides one of these cars in a garage or drives it a few hundred miles a year gingerly - ain’t doing these cars any favours. They need proper maintenance and regular thrashing to keep them happy

Yep, most of us know this. Just feel a bit sorry for the guy who bought her. First time I have sold one on and kind of let someone down.

Sadly - the Blue S4 has highlighted to me just how irrelevant a big file of service history and bills can be.

This ain’t your fault John and you shouldn’t be shouldering the burden

You did the honourable thing and went on and beyond that John. So don't feel bad at all.

I agree with Barry - all these cars are "classics" and "buyer be ready with an open wallet" should really be the slogan used. I'd love an old Esprit, or an Elan (sprint or the +2)  but I know i am not handy with a spanner, I'm getting too old to learn (though have plans for all sorts of mechanics courses for when I retire lol) and so I ain't buying one - yet lol!.  I have a tremendous amount of respect for people who can fix these cars, and for the people who buy them, but if you ain't able or prepared to do the spannering then don't go there unless you're prepared to open the wallet.  And expect to open the wallet as soon as you receive the car...

I also agree with Barry that cars that do not get used tend to be the worst sort of buy - they just need to be used to keep everything tip top and also by using them the problems appear and so can be fixed.  We're still too obsessed with mileage as an indicator of condition in this country - a 20 year old car with 10k miles is not as usable as a well maintained, 20 year old car that was a cat c/d 12 years ago but was fixed properly and has been well maintained and driven since.  My 17 year old Type 116 is very much a modern car. Was built in 2001, Cat C (bodywork damage in 2007) and is now on 58k miles and flies over the tracks of the UK (well, chugs when I'm driving it, flies when someone who knows how to drive is steering it!) and has, in the past 2 years of ownership been 100% reliable.  Most would turn their noses up at it (due to the mileage being perceived to be too high (for crying out loud) and the cat c 11 years ago) and would instead go and buy a lower mileage car that has been sat and done maybe 300 miles a year for the past 10 years at almost double the cash i paid for my car. And then be too afraid to use it as that would make it dirty and reduce the resale value. FFS!..............................

Keep going John, one day I just may get to the point where I know how to hold a spanner and could be getting a lovely Esprit S3/3 in Ice blue from you!.........

God doesn't want me, and the Devil isn't finished with me yet.

The small print.

My comments and observations are my own, invariably "tongue in cheek", and definitely, sarcastic in nature. Therefore, do not take my advice, suggestions, observations or posts seriously or personally and remember if you do, do anything, that I may have suggested, then you have done this based solely on your own decision to do so and therefore you acknowledge responsibility and accountability (I know, in this modern world these are the hardest things for you to accept) for your actions and indemnify me of any influence, responsibility, accountability, or liability, in what you have done. In other words, you did it, so suffer the consequences on your own!
