brake caliper swap..

Thinking about buying teh red calipers that lotus are selling off...  

how much of an arse is it to bleed the system through, being its part of the clutch fluids too..

is this something i can myself or is it drop into hanger 111 job..

if ao wonder what the aprox cost would be...  

yes i will phone them monday for a quote , but wondered if any one had thoughts??

Any news on this? I'm late seeing this but keen to know whether the brake bleeding is a DIY job or not for the faint hearted...

I have rung around and been quoted 3 hours and £60 ish for brake fluid change.  So that is approx £300 for fitting at a specialist or over £500 at  a dealer.

Will changing the calipers be an easy DIY job?  I could perhaps install the calipers  myself and then get the brake fuid properly changed and bled during the yearly service that is due soon.

Swapping callipers is relatively straight forward. However, as soon as they are changed, you will have to bleed the brakes again before use. (There is no way in the world that you could change the callipers and not get some air in the system).

Just downloaded and read the service notes. Looks like a super easy job.  Will definitely attempt it myself including the bleeding.  Depending on results, will then drive to my local specialist for my annual service and replacement brake fluid.

I'll be doing the same myself- a complete set of red calipers and pads for £280 was too good to pass up.

Just wonderng if I should get a spare set of dampers they’re advertising for £90...

Superb price at £280+Vat.  I wish I had waited.  Im tempted to buy a third set.  I paid the higher price and still haven't put them on yet.

Was also hoping to sell my used black ones for over £300.

As for the dampers definitely get those too. Its an excellent price for new dampers and will make long term Evora ownership cheaper.  Of course only buy if you plan to keep your car for a long time.  Ive just ordered a set of front and rears.

Now have a spare set of dampers, calipers, leather seat covers, brand new set of wheels amongst other smaller items stored in the garage.  If only Lotus could sell door latches and window regulators for similar cheap prices.

Yes you’re right, the dampers were far too cheap to ignore so I ordered a set today!

Yes, I’ll be keeping the Evora for a while yet (unless the roadster eventually arrives) but I’m seriously contemplating a 1-2 year Elise 220 as a weekend car (although my wife may kill me..)

have read the service notes...  will be doing myself...  

wonder what the shocks would normally go for for and how long they would last..

I believe the dampers are normally about £500 each from DeRoure.

I probably won’t need them for ages but you never know, one on my Elise failed at 40,000miles

It's a shame that I bought the calipers at the higher price, but I'm still looking forward to have the painted ones on instead of the old unpainted ones.

The dampers are a bargain. A complete set is on the way....  Just as some of the fellow Evora owners, I'm also building a second car piece by piece.... I hope my wife doesn't figure it out before it is complete....

i may even go for install at the weekend..  :  

anyone want some cheap oem  black  ones, with decent pad life remaining...    not sure what ther are worth.. £100 - £150? i suppose they only fit the evora  and no good for any other car as branded lotus on the front

Ok guys, might get some time at the weekend to swap out the calipers..

now i quite handy with the spanners, and have changed many calipers, and brake fluid over the years..

reading through the service notes , it appears lotus has tried to re invent the round wheel square once again... 

can anyone advise if im going to run into trouble just swapping out calipers and bleeding normally.  

the following extract is taken from teh service notes when swapping out the fluids...  i dont intend to swap out all the fluids as will get this done at its service next septmeber..

so intended to undertake one caliper at a time, with minial fluid loss, bleeding each one as i go along..

1. Connect the Lotus Techcentre to the diagnostic link, select ABS and follow the brake bleeding instructions.

   Whilst this automatic process is taking place (with all 4 calliper nipples open), gently cycle the brake pedal up and down whilst keeping the reservoir topped up, to move any air bubbles displaced from the ABS unit down the hydraulic lines. Finish by closing each nipple with the pedal down

referring the caliper replacement section it does mention doing each one and limiting fluid loss, but then refers to bleeding each caliper as required.. and refers to the above..

Hi Andy.

What it is describing is the ABS bleed procedure.  The Lotus diagnostic tool has a procedure which activates the ABS pump and valves etc in turn to bleed any air out of the ABS system.

You might get away without needing to do this, it just depends how far the air travels back up the hoses (particularly at the front, near the ABS unit) before you can bleed it out.

id already got you pencilled in to swap them over come my annual service  when my evora comes back to you...the fluids need doing this year anyway..  i did get a extra over cost from you a just before xmas.. which was very very reasonable...

but thats not till september   not sure i can wait that long...looking at them all shiney in the box ,  being quite handy with spanners (not as handy as you boys mind) , one thing thats starting to annoy me with the evora  is the difficulty in accessing and doing little mods like this.. 

it would  be shame if something so simple as swapping out calipers cant be done with out a return to base.. to use lotus diagnostic...

lucky for me if i do decide to do it  and mess it up... i have you guys,  one of the best service centres just down the road to fix it for me..

Andy, I  replaced my calipers last week.  I chose to vacuum bled mine, although I did all four at the end of the swap. It was very straight forward and I did not have an issue.

I should note that to prevent excess air into the lines, I unbolted the old caliper first and placed it on a box adjacent to the rotor (so it would not stress the hose). I then bolted the new caliper in place before loosening the banjo bolt on the old caliper for the feed hose.  It only took a few seconds to transfer the hose (with new crush washers) onto the new caliper and there was very little fluid loss. I believe this helped in that air did not make it back up into the ABS system.  So bleeding was straightforward.
