Can an Evora be made quieter inside?

Recommended Posts

I find my car quiet noisy at motorway speeds but it’s not engine or exhaust noise? Seems like road / tyre noise and wind noise mainly so the stereo has to be turned up to hear it better. I had the carpets out to clean and noticed there isn’t much in the way of sound proofing on the floor. Odd sewn together carpet sandwiches in the footwell and a stuck on anti drumming pad but none are a good tight fit. Has anyone done much sound deadening to the interior and has it made much difference? Can the side windows be angle adjusted at all as I think my drivers side glass is noisy because it’s not shutting tight enough to the seal? I don’t have a noisy exhaust to listen to!

Honestly, just put some soft foam earplugs in.

Makes a HUGE difference to background noise levels while still being able to hear voices/radar/horns, etc.

Weigh pretty much nothing. I'd say Colin Chapman would approve!

Evoras should be pretty quiet at motorway speeds. I'd wager two things are causing your noise levels - wind noise from window/door seals (there shouldn't be any) and worn tyres. I put some Conti Sport Contact 7s on mine and it made a massive difference to noise levels, as did a bit of self repair around the triangular A pillar trim. Might be worth getting your seals checked by a specialist if not immediately obvious how to resolve. Early Evoras did have a bit of an issue with the seals - was sorted on 2012 cars on, although of course age will have an impact too by now!

My tyres are ok at front but plan to replace rears soon. I may add some foil butyl sound deadening at some point. Window seal does need adjusting but not sure how as yet.

I found it really gets noisy at about about 120kph, and as @EGTE puts it, SportContact 7s quieted it down a measurable amount, but it's no GT level - my brother's Jaguar XK is probably as loud at 200kph as Evora is at 130.
I guess it's just Lotus, so you got to live with some compromises. Roof is paper thin, window seals are not really advanced (mine actually start whistling at about 180kph) no matter the aligning, floor down the feet is just a single piece of sheet metal, and the whole car structure transfers resonations...

I would think most owners would not add sound deadening due to added weight &/or already feeling it’s a quiet car for what is it.

That being said, I have always thought a lot of noise comes from the doors, when I finally upgrade the sound system I will add sound deadening to the doors mostly for improved sound quality (midbass).

Thanks, I've found loads of info on Lotus Talk and even how to tighten up the window rails and locks to put more pressure on the window seals. Lot of people have added sound deadening and as the Evora is already a heavy car weight isn't an issue to me. Any car can benefit from some improvements. I've got a more modern car play ICE unit but want to hear it a bit more clearly when cruising.

I added some sound deadening stuff to sub/amp enclosure and it made a difference however it still needs a custom enclosure to make it proper effective ! I think some sound insulation around door speaker and cards would help certainly with sound quality from your ICE

What EVORA do you have, I have a 400 and removed the rear seat padding, and it’s a bit noisier.

When you strip it all away the cabin of the Evora is effectively a composite bath tub with the acoustic qualities to match so it’s not surprise it’s a bit boomy.  It’ll take some doing to reduce this but why not try?

I have used (off Amazon) Canopus sound deadening material on the inside of my doors and the sub enclosure. It’s self adhesive and easy to work with. I wouldn’t know if it’s the best on the market but it did the job for what o was after.

I’d say that under the back seat and behind it would be a good place to start.  Then the floors, underseats and doors etc.

in terms of weight, it is around 4kg for every 10sq ft.  I get the comments about weight but I’m 72kg, and no one seems to suggest that a driver who is 80kg makes a substantial difference to a car and if it’s that much of an issue one can leave a couple of gallons of fuel out to balance it out  Besides, having the weight at floor level would reduce the centre of gravity by a fraction of an inch to compensate.

The only thing is that if you do this and don’t like it, it will be a pig to unstick it all.  I really wouldn’t fancy that job.
