Starter Motor Failure

Recommended Posts

Unfortunately for me, my starter motor packed up yesterday. Even more unfortunate, is that Lotus do not have any stock and don't know when they will (So i was told today).

Have searched high and low on the net for a new replacement, to no avail. Evora is my daily drive so if anyone knows of any new starters available please let me know.

Part number is A132E0014k. (previously A132E6052)

Thanks in advance.

There is a used evora starter motor currently on sale on eBay for £150. It looks like it came from a 2009 car and they are quoting a different part number but if your desperate it might be worth a look.

Just checked again and the part number matches the previous one you listed so it sounds like it may be what you are looking for, although I don't know how much they are  to buy new?

Thanks for replies, been to Toyota today . They are getting back to me tomorrow, the camry never sold in uk so may have to wait a while.

Ebay one is a possibility, but as its being fixed under warranty the company want a new part. (£385 inc VAT)

Part is shared with Exige,  suprised there are none available.

As last resort, you can see if the brushes are seized and try replacing just the motor brushes if so. Its been done before. Cost $16 US in parts (off ebay) over here.

At least it will get your DD back on the road while you wait for a new one.

When mine failed I looked into this.  It's a Bosch part so available direct from them or a motor factor as well as from Lotus.

Or it's very common that the internal failure can be fixed by a specialist alternator/starter refurbisher, like these folks http://www.alternatorsandstartermotors.co.uk

The yoke kits from eBay give you the bits if you are handy on doing own repairs.  There's a thread on LotusTalk with loads of pics on how to do it: http://www.lotustalk.com/forums/f417/replacing-starter-motor-brush-yoke-265129/

  • 4 weeks later...

Typical!  How many times have we all seen on here for various bits of stuff that it's "out of stock" or special order.... I thought one of the advantages of having a Lotus was that they raided parts bins so availability of spares should be good. Ho hum, show's how dumb I am.

I came into this world screaming and covered in someone elses blood. I'll probably leave it in the same way.

To be fair it's not confined to Lotus and seems to be a supply chain issue across the industry.  My wife's Audi has already been off the road for a week awaiting a replacement part, which isn't expected for at least another two weeks.  Fortunately it's a warranty repair so the dealer has given us a new one while we wait.

I remember some poor chap on here having to wait weeks for a clutch. Seem to remember @Bibs helping out.

Clutch.. Starter motor.. Are we being unreasonable?! Wear and tear parts should be 24hrs max from HQ.

@TomE That's Audi for you!?

My wife's XC auto tailgate failed last week... She took it in and they gave her a call 3 hrs later saying new hydraulic struts had been ordered and the car would be ready by 10.30 in the morning... Hydraulic struts, not a starter motor or clutch!

I guess with the industry streamlining and everything now just in time manufacturing/supply/fit based on production volumes the supply chain has very little loose stock these days?

Lotus do offer a 24 hour turnaround for VOR (Vehicle off Road) parts, but the suppliers need to keep their end of the bargain and supply parts.

Didnt know they did this, excellent. ??

In my own experience apart from Headlights everything else always seemed to arrive without any bother.

Have you tried asking a Toyota dealer?

Just as an FYI on this, my starter has gone today and I've ordered a new one from Lotus. Since the adapter plate is unique to the Evora, Lotus have to machine the starters so you can't use any alternatives.

Can the adapter plate (A132F0013F ?) not be taken off and attached to an alternative replacement?

I'm sure if that could be done, Lotus would have done it to save having to make effectively custom parts.

Also IPS or manual?

My car is a manual. Starter motor is a different part number for the IPS.

It's a denso motor Bibs. You may be right that Lotus then machine it but I'm surprised.

Edit:  The motor I've shown is probably the IPS one. Earlier Evora had a Hitachi motor, later ones are reported to have Denso.
