Hi Barry

Any special tricks for the oil priming?

How did you do it?

I also need to do it with my SE, been sitting too long in the garage.

We used one of these. Remove the oil filter and remove turbo oil feed pipe. Find a pipe that fits up the inside of the turbo oil pipe - used electrical tape to wind round the pipe and force inside to form a crude seal.

https://rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?mpre=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.co.uk%2Fulk%2Fitm%2F132472651937

get the oil hot - 10w60 is like treacle when it’s cold. Pump until it spews out the centre of the oil filter mounting. Keep the pump running - put your finger over the hole on the oil filter housing to stop the oil flow from there. Run the pump for another 30seconds or so.

fill the oil filter half full with oil and whack it back on.

now test you can take 300ml out of that turbo oil supply pipe when cranking the engine with spark plugs removed and fuel pump inertia cut off switch unplugged. If the engine has been sat for a long time -a few squirts of oil down the bores wouldn’t be a bad idea. You should see the oil come out of that pipe in a pulsing/flowing way in time with the engine cranking. There needs to be plenty and a reliable flow - by the time you have taken 300ml it will be. I reckon we cranked mine for about 60seconds in total - don’t set fire to the starter !!

My engine sounds the same as yours does, Barry. Chirping belt etc.

Well done, it's all downhill now!

We’re you equally as elated ? Walking round like a Cheshire Cat on MDMA with an intense hardon all night ??

Not really. But to be fair, mine wasn't a box of bits to start with.

And you knew yours actually worked before you took it apart - again.

any puddles of oil apparently yet?

Snap - would never bother with one.  I change mine regularly, so I see no benefit.

How much is a blue belt, anyway?

I think I paid about £12 for a Gates belt last time I bought one.

Expensive - about £135 from sj !! Then the last time I looked at the costs of valves and pistons - I reckon it’s probably worth it.

I value my time and the skin on my hands and arms more than the £100 quid or so difference. On balance - I’ve never kept a car long enough to need to change a cam belt - so I must be a mug ?

About time we had a road-test report from you, Barry.

Don’t be bloody stupid - that’s not nice - you must surely be aware the tyres are shot, the clucth system locked solid and I don’t wish to discuss brakes at this stage

After much hide and seek today - I found the rod that goes from the slave to the fork handle - anyone say four candles ??

hmm I think - this should be easy. Bolt on slave - yep it’s an old one - but bleeds and moves just fine - master looks newish. Bear in mind this car ain’t moved under its own steam for 8 years.

Ahh best I take a picture of the Ecu for @sailorbob - great - dropped the new iPhone straight down the side of the fuel tank. The foul language was unreal - a full basil fawlty breakdown ensued.

multi tool out and I cut a section of the wood cover and managed to get my arm down and retrieve said phone.

try and start car - flat battery

jump started - warmed up - that’s the longest it’s ran - smoke everywhere from the manifold slip joints as the copper slip and oil burns off.

cant select any gear - won’t have it - reverse almost goes - but starts to crunch.

fluid in master looks shitty.

So there’s three hours of my life I ain’t never getting back. Huff

I spent an hour yesterday in the Esprits garage, when it was -7 deg. cel outside plus the chill factor. That equals something like -14 to -16 deg. cel. A bit Cold, I'd say. But in the garage was a comfortable +16 deg. cel. Just enough so that a thick scottish sweater was enough to give some heat. The only problem I encountered was that it's a bit more difficult to actually move around inside the car, under the car and in the trunk and frunk.

Kudos for working on the car Barry. Looking forward to hearing the end of it.

Kind regards,

Jacques

Cold in the garage today - slush in the chargecooler.

main water tanks fine. Disconnected chargecooler and moved it into the house. Tipped it out and it’s a mix of blue and slush.

Car covered and snows blowing everywhere

We managed to get out today - first time since Thursday. The fiat 500 was a blast down the lanes in the snow - why folks buy Audi’s I’ll never know.

anyway - it’s spring feeling outside - from the sublime to the ridiculous in 24 hours.

my garage is horrible - slush and water everywhere. But I have this clutch issue which needs looking at.

Stripped the old master off and brought it into the warm2E2A128A-E011-4B6A-AF12-C302F4D8B37E.thumb.jpeg.025e7320ee5dcea03248ba13182b0b0b.jpeg

old one is the top light silver one - looks nice and ok from the outside doesn’t it. That’s why I thought a bleed and new fluid would do the trick.  The new one was horrifically expensive at £12 delivered - I simply have no idea how folks afford to keep these cars going.

AED788D3-EC3C-42FD-A88B-98BBD4B6DCD9.thumb.jpeg.f6a97906cec7ef0d32b57c3b1ccfa86d.jpeg

looking down the bore - and that’s exactly what I wanted to see. Have now reassembled the new one with the rod and will face the refitting another day with a new slave as well in the warm knowledge that I should actually be able to engage a gear??
