Lovely S2 in for some work

I do like an S2.  This is @Hornsey Boy Dragan's, at mine for cambelt/clutch slave and various bits of fettling.

As is customary in my life, more weird crap.  Thought I'd start with a quick win and change the clutch slave.  Then prepared to bleed, got Dragan to pump, and received a faceful of fluid.  Investigations revealed something I've not seen before in over 40 years on cars.  A tiny occlusion in the slave cylinder cast that runs all the way into the interior.  That was a good start.  Fortunately, cambelt change yielded some surprises, but none of them major.

The tiny hole here will jet a bloody long way under pressure!

Must relate an anecdote on this one.

I changed the cambelt, balanced the carbs, and did various other bits and pieces, and Dragan collected it Wednesday.  Maybe an hour later, I got the call I always dread: he's broken down on a motorway slip after let's of missing and popping and banging. 

Naturally, my pessimist mind fears the worst, and I'm in for 5 grand and loads of work due to a belt cockup.  I tell Dragan to get it relayed back to me and prepare for Armageddon.  Meanwhile I'm trying to deal with a broken down TE but my mind really isn't on the job.

Hours later, Dragan finally arrives and we get the S2 on the drive.  As we take the cover off I immediately notice the king lead is detached from the coil and hovering maybe 2cm above it.  I just pointed. Dragan reacted appropriately.

I fettled the loose lead, refitted it (nice and tight) and checked all the timing marks just in case.  Started the car-perfect.  I almost poured a stiff one there and then.

Dragan drove home, and we all lived happily ever after.

If only I'd checked the glovebox.

The S2 drove like a dream from @Sparky, until in the fast lane of the M25 just pass J24 it started to splatter. I thought hold on the fuel is running out, but the gauge was registering some in there. Then it got worse, and one brown trouser moment later I managed to get to over onto the slip road of the J25.

Due to where the car was positioned the RAC insisted that the car was picked up. Needless to say there was lots of man hugs all round when Sparky clicked the lead back into place.    

The joys of classic car motoring and owning a Lotus Esprit ....I honestly love every single minute of it  roll on the next adventure

Ah, but that one WAS my fault!

Similar here a couple of years ago, turned out to be a bad crimp on the fuel pump spade terminal

I had an issue where some prat had dislodged the excitation wire off the back of the alternator, and we came to a grinding halt on the M25.

And some mug had to come out and rescue you.

Maybe @Sparky should start an M25 recovery service. I'd happily join up if he accepts foreign members. 🙂
