Evora market watch, for discussion and to help those searching!

It’s definitely not for the light hearted, nor test pilots and fence sitters.

Basically, as soon as you see the ad, you have to call and be ready to put down a deposit sight unseen.

The inspection and test drive is really then about confirming the car is not a lemon.  So be ready with all of the questions you need to ask when you make that call.

This approach gets you the best (maybe only) chance of getting the car you want, particularly if you have a specific spec in mind, but reduces your opportunity to haggle down to nil.

Exactly this. Buying sight unseen is ok with newer cars (I’ve done it a few times with motorbikes) but you do take a bit of a punt as there’s only so much you can tell from a photo or even a video - is the interior pungent with smoke, for example? Have bits been stuck back on? Is the chassis bent underneath? (I had this recently on a car I went to look at!)

A good line of questioning and an honest seller can reduce the risk but there’s a gut feel you get in person that’s very hard to establish any other way.

How does it stand on a legal point of view if you pay an initial deposit to secure the car, then; on further inspection it does turn out to be not what exactly as described - Do you lose your deposit ?

I suppose it may be easier with a trader- but not with a private sale ?

Just curious as I may be looking for one in the near future

Legally they can't keep it but can deduct any expenses incurred in prepping the car for sale for you. Same with private or trade and must be reasonable expenses, eg they trailed the car to a dealership to inspect or similar.

No worries Matt, you'll love the Evora mate so happy shopping! Let us know if you see any you like but as above, make sure you get in quick as good, well priced ones don't hang around for very long!

Will do. Thanks

Although I also have had my head turned by the Aston Vantage v8 (for similar money).

I'll still attend Newlands Corner - but if I do get an Aston, will park it in the other car park 😁

(someone -  please talk me out of it !) 😄

Pilko was once quoted £8k to get his through and MOT by the local AM dealership, did it himself for less than £300. Check cost of ownership for each would be my recommendation but they do make an epic noise and drive very well.

I paid in full to Sytner for an Evora. Once I viewed, it was not as described with interior repairs and damage.

They had serviced it, new MOT, new tyres in preparation for collection.

They refunded the full amount.

Don't mention the clutch on a V8V it's even more of a subject than on the Evora if you can believe that!

Nice car, just disable the valve in the exhaust and sit there revving it is enough to keep you happy. Not quite as special as the Evora in my eyes as there are quite a lot of them about but lovely all the same!

If you haven’t done it already, drive them back to back. Your answer will then be obvious.

If you want a V8 burble and the badge, you will get a Vantage. If you want pretty much everything else (particularly driving dynamics), you’ll get an Evora.

(FWIW, I sold a V8 Vantage to get my Evora and haven’t regretted it for a second).

My dad had a V8 Vantage, the 4.7 and I drove it. It feels completely different to the Evora. Much less usable IMO due to horrible clutch control and running costs. Nicer inside and looks wise I prefer the vantage, it is a perfect car design.

Driving them is very different though, vantage felt sluggish and heavy and a bit intimidating whereas you feel you can place an Evora with precision and it feels quicker and more agile.

The two cars do very different things but only one is a all out drivers car. Don't think you'd regret either but as is said above, drive them both.

V12 is a different story though 😂

I agree with Bibs.

Best to be really clear about what the deposit is for which is to hold the car subject to inspection, and to demonstrate to the dealer (I wouldn’t be comfortable randomly send a private seller money) that you’re a serious customer, not just looking.

With mine, I called the day I saw the ad but someone had beaten me to it and put a deposit on an hour earlier.  I left my details with the dealer just in case it didn’t work out and three weeks later he called me to say that the previous buyer had pulled out “because of the Ukraine war and the surge in fuel prices”.

The point is that if he has people call after you’ve given your deposit he always has a fallback if you find fault with the car.

The only time that may be an issue is where for whatever reason he cannot sell it and makes a loss - which I had at the beginning of the pandemic.  I put a deposit and signed the paperwork (having test driven) a £30k car on 3rd of March 2020.  Arranged to pick up at the end of the March after selling my existing car .

Because many of us thought the world was ending Iseriously contemplated cancelling the order when lockdown began and took legal advice from a lawyer friend.    He told me that the contractual right of the dealer would be to sell the car for whatever they could get and then sue me for the difference.

So I followed through with the order and the car was eventually delivered in May but as I say that was a signed contract.

Totally agree with this, it is and feels very heavy, trying to reverse up a slope the clutch is horrible,  but tbh it is a fantastic looking car inside and out. Mine was the 4.3 which always felt under powered.

This is it when I sold it to John Holland in Sheffield.

This LE has come onto ebay. Im not sure its the cheapest on the UK as the seller says. Also I'm not sure the cost of the service which is outstanding on an 80k mile car ?

Lover of everything Lotus Cars and proud owner of production Evora No.75 (2nd UK customer specced car by VIN). Originally from the Far East....of Anglia, I read black box data for a living so that could explain a lot!

Short MOT too, not a lot of info in the as.

I've messaged anyway, thanks for sharing.

I saw that one as I'm still keeping an eye on the market before I list mine next month and thought, full service and MOT costs me around £400 from a specialist so not sure why you wouldn't just get it done with this type of car 🤔
