Topology Optimisation - a mathematical approach to identify a geometry that meets certain criteria, e.g. a minimised mass and minimum strength. As the softwares used to do this mature, expect to see more such organic looking geometries appear in products. A misnomer to say it's a 'bio-inspired' approach as it just uses physics (an optimisation using the adjoint solution to the governing physical phenomena equations) but interesting nevertheless that the shapes it identifies are often similar to those found in nature. I'm sure Chapman would have loved this as it's the very epitome of lightweighting.

The car under the skin almost looks skeletal...like you say, 'aping' an organic structure rather than man made. It's very odd to look at!

Lots of people attribute AI to their latest and greatest products but topology optimisation (TO) doesn't use AI (i.e. neural nets). The biggest issue with TO is that it will naturally create geometries that can only be 3D printed. Metal 3D printing is not cheap! There are ways to constrain a TO so that it creates geometries tailored for a specific manufacturing method such as 5-axis milling and such options are beginning to become available in commercial CAE tools.

Interesting indeed. Czinger are certainly jumping on the AI bandwagon and attributing the design to that...

Everyone expects 'AI' to be the panacea for everything so anything with AI is obviously better. I suppose if you play fast and loose with the definition of AI one could argue that any type simulation is both artificial and is intelligent, but that's cheating

AI - the in buzz words or expression. 6 months to a year ago the average person had never heard of it. Now everything is suddenly “AI designed” as it is trendy and will supposedly sell. 

The other day I saw an advert for something completely cheap tat and crap and thought to myself AI could be the designers initials and advert technically couldn’t be challenged. “Alastair Ingram Designed” 🫢

I mentioned this place before, an old Saab garage that is now a sandwich and burger joint. So cool!

We've become regular visitors, especially for their cars&burger evenings. Too bad it will already be the last one of the season this week...

A mate told me about a cheap car that could keep us busy for a few evenings. Like I need more projects... But I just can't say 'no', especially if it's this cheap. So I paid €350 and drove this to the Workshop:

Quite slowly, as the clutch was all but gone. And for the last couple of miles, we needed to have the Range Rover in front, as the bloody thing overheated. 😞 
So the rest of the day was pretty much spent like this:

But all in all not too bad, clutch was out in just 3 hours and the overheating was due to a stuck thermostat it seems. Fingers crossed no other damage was done and we can soon put her up for sale. Another mate came to have a look and we ended the night having a good chat, with a bottle of fine liquor to share and Mötorhead to set the mood. That alone made it worth it.

I very briefly considered keeping her as a cheap alternative to an Elise S1, but I'll just save up for the real thing.
It's not a bad car, but not what I'm used to. And I have no desire to mingle with hair dressers. 😁
