I guess that you'd want a learner to know that big red warning light telling them to stop driving, means they need to stop driving. Not that it does stop some people who just carry on in real life.

i always think pad censors are an unnecessary bit of modern car tech. The censers always cut through very early with usually 1000/1500 miles of meat left on them. What happened to the good old days of actually looking at them?

Isn't the reason it's a red warning light simply because the bulb is also used for low brake fluid? In some modern Range Rovers there is no (red) warning light, just a message on the dash. I guess you'd be allowed to continue then, as it's not an (immediate) safety critical issue.

So true. The brake warnings have been around a long time though, I'd say around 40 years.

We've come a long way from a car manual telling you how to adjust points or (Lotus content!) a sticker with the vacuum diagram in the engine compartment, to manuals just telling you not to drink battery acid and take the car to the stealer to get a light bulb replaced... Over here, you can be asked to check oil and coolant at the start of the driving test. I had to do this when I got my truck license, as well as checking tyre pressures and cargo securing. But a lot of moderns don't even have a dipstick, and getting into the appropriate menu for the digital readout can be quite complicated.
If that's progress, I'm happy to stay a grumpy old barsteward. 😉

Nottinghamshire's Conservative PCC Caroline Henry broke a 30mph (48km/h) limit in four locations in the county between March and June 2021.

Speed cameras clocked the PCC's speed as high as 40mph in a 30mph zone, with other excess speeds recorded at 35mph and 38mph.

I read that article and thought much the same including the fact that the mum should be damn well asking for her money back - assuming it was given to her on a lone basis.

Unfortunately my brother has a similar problem; and it is a problem, an addiction to spending and of wanting what you don't have.  A couple of years back, I had to bail my brother out of some serious debt to avoid him loosing his house and it meant selling the Evora to do it.  It came with some very strict criteria I can tell you, he's managed to repay a good chunk of that debt to date and he absolutely knows he owes me the rest once has cleared his CCJ / repayment plan which will last 7 years and which takes every spare penny you have, which is a good thing.  He now has to rigidly budget and I can see the difference its made.  His outlook previously was to spend what he had, which wasn't a great deal to begin with, partly because he could see other people with these things and he wanted in and partly because he didn't have the patience to save but mostly he never stopped to think if he actually wanted it (or needed it) - it was just impulsive.  Now he comes to me when he's both just browsing stuff and thinking about buying something (which he can't) to talk through why he was wanting it in the first place.  It kind of helped that I sold the Evora because he knew that was an awfully big give from me - my first sports car.  Well, that, and I keep reminding him that I did not sell it for him to f*** up all over again.

Anyway point, I'm making is spending can be an addiction - the left over bits are seen as treat money and after a while the treats are seen as essential.

I can get the addiction piece but sometimes I think today we are too gracious with giving some, not all, people an out.

There are a lot of people whinging in this country right now that times are hard and it's all someone elses fault but I don't accept that.

There are more available jobs than workers so opportunities exist to earn.

When I was a kid my Dad has job, then worked in a pub on top and at a club too - so some weeks he was working three (one full time) jobs and whilst we weren't well off it assured we had a good life 

Back in the late 80's I had a good job in IT with a bank. But when interest rates hit 15%+ I was struggling to pay my mortgage so got a job behind the bar in a club, Wed, Thu, Fri, Sat night working from 1900 to 0130 each night. Managed to earn enough to keep the house and never had time to spend money as was always working or knackered.

Something has gone wrong in this country as too many people seem to blame everyone but themselves and seem to think they are entitled to have everything they want.

Your brother will thank you for the tough love and decisions you made to support him and hopefully he will beat his addiction.

You know, we may complain about the state of the U&K, our politicians, and our bureaucrats, but at least we can always rely on those in positions of power in France to repeatedly show us just how incompetent and what a lying bunch of toe rags they are. Hot on the heels of the debacle at the Stadium France for the Champions League final, were we now know there was systemic lying and incompetence from officials at all levels, we now get this reported.  You really could not make it up....

 

The Port of Dover has declared a "critical incident" due to six-hour queues leading to the ferry terminal.

Chief executive Doug Bannister said the port had been "badly let down" by French border controls.

French authorities said an "unforeseeable technical incident" in the Channel Tunnel meant French border police were delayed into Dover.

However Eurotunnel rejected this, saying it was "categorically not the reason for the difficulties".

A spokesman added: "The critical incident in Dover started overnight. The minor technical incident at the Channel Tunnel occurred at 07:00 BST, well after the critical incident."

French border resources have now increased, the port said, and "traffic is slowly beginning to move".

Dover's MP Natalie Elphicke claimed French border officers "didn't turn up for work", causing traffic to queue for miles.

However in a statement this afternoon, the prefect for the Haut-de-France region, Georges-Francois Leclerc, said it was not correct to say that the French had failed to mobilise sufficient border police for the predicted rush.

"The increase in traffic for this weekend was fully anticipated and a suitable deployment was prepared," the statement said.

"The plan was to have all the police booths manned at Dover by 08:30 BST.

"An unforeseeable technical incident in the tunnel meant that police had to push back their full deployment by an hour."

A few weeks ago we were all destined to die due to the forecast unbearable heat, then it was the thunder storms (which never materialised) where we were all destined to drown, now the headlines show that we will all starve to death due to soaring food prices which we can’t afford.
Soaring food prices, the majority of which are only happening because of the media’s constant brain washing and pre-conditioning of the U.K. public through their ridiculous reporting.

Something a lot lighter (fortunately) had me shake my head or at least raise my eyebrows earlier this week.

After a good meal at one of our favorite pubs we decided to order ice cream for desert. Much to our surprise, we both got a fork instead of a little spoon. Despite the heat, we managed to finish our cups before it got too runny. 🙂 If not, we would have found other means, just not sure my tongue would have reached the bottom. The dog would have liked that no doubt, especially if he was allowed to 'clean' my beard afterwards.
