Marine engines are usually turbocharged. It could of course be a twin scroll pump for some other purpose.

I know, but so are the engines in large off road equipment. And I can't really think of anything else of that size. Maybe a generator?

Having had a bit of a think about it, it's a kind of pump, same as a supercharger, but for pumping/compressing gas, probably in onshore gas facilities.

More Triumphs, used to fancy a TR7.

Triumph was part of the BL empire, then ended up as MG Rover, I used to work at BL in Grantham.

My parents had 3. 1978 red auto coupe, rear-ended and written-off in Kettering town centre. 1979 brown 5 speed coupe. 1981 gold 5 speed convertible, which I used to smoke about in like a young pimp. That one still exists somewhere but has since had a Rover V8 transplant.

We later had a red 150bhp TR6, which was much more fun.

I remember test driving one at Appleyard  Stirling in about 1980 and thinking I loved so much about it but thinking underpowered. (Now a Tesco store site) then went and bought a tango orange Escort Mexico ( now Stirling Uni apartments) and about 6 months later left it in a ditch somewhere when I ran out of talent shortly before the road. The TR8 was the sweet spot for me but too expensive, and then I got married……

RAC Club Dinner 2024 with Sir Ron Dennis and David Richards CBE. 

Utterly brilliant night with some interesting stories:

Apple (as in computers) were on the verge of buying McLaren.

David Richards ripped up a letter he found from Ron (then of Project Four not McLaren) to Rothmans asking for money to buy McLaren, circa 1980, as David wanted the sponsorship. 

McLaren F1, 300 were supposed to be built (106 was the final tally but only 64 road cars). Ron owned 3 at one point, they couldn't sell them. Owners insisted on racing them, not McLaren and that brought in much needed cash.

The Auto Wash Bowl in Chicago circa 1920's. Lots of dirt roads back then. "The nearly 80-foot-wide, ridged concrete bowl was about 16 inches at its deepest point in the center. Customers paid 25 cents to an attendant who strapped a protective rubber cover over the radiator. Patrons would then enter the bowl via a ramp and drive their cars around and around the bowl at a speed of about 10 miles per hour. The ridges in the concrete would vibrate the car and the water, creating a sloshing action that helped wash away all the mud from the chassis and wheels.

The process took about three or four minutes. The car would then exit the bowl where patrons who wanted a complete car wash could enter one of the bays where the rest of the car would be cleaned. On a busy Saturday, about 75 cars per hour would go for a spin in the wash bowl."- Copied from the Vintage Everyday website.
